Background

The Kaufman-Wills Group's executive management team possesses an extraordinary blend of business development, information management, and digital content expertise.  Cara S. Kaufman, Alma J. Wills, and Fred H. Fusting are the Company's Partners. Together, they bring to their clients more than a half-century of progressive management experience in health care publishing. The team's collective experience provides a strong foundation to support its place in the market and increase the revenues of its publishing clients. 

Partners 

Cara S. Kaufman 

Prior to co-founding Kaufman-Wills Group in 2001, Cara was executive director of an online publishing service for Wolters Kluwer; and before that, at Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, Cara was group publisher of the American Heart Association journals, executive editor responsible for acquiring and developing new periodicals, and marketing director for the company's extensive line of periodicals including The Lancet. Cara also served as managing editor of the Year Book medical specialty series and worked in the editorial department of the American Dental Association. Cara received a BA with High Honors in English from Carleton College and an MBA in Marketing from DePaul University.

Alma J. Wills 

Alma spent 23 years developing and managing medical periodicals for Lippincott Williams & Wilkins before co-founding the Kaufman-Wills Group. Her last position at LWW was Executive Vice President for Society Journals, including some of the most prestigious journals in medicine. As President of the Periodical Publishing Division of Williams & Wilkins, Alma directed a business unit that published 87 journals, a line of newsletters, tabloid publications, directories, books, and advertising specialty items. She has been directly involved in the contract acquisition, purchase, or launch of more than 100 periodicals. Alma also was Director of Full Text Licensing for Ovid. She has a BS in Business Administration from the University of Baltimore and an MBA from Loyola College in Maryland.

 

Fred Fusting

Before joining the Kaufman-Wills Group as partner in 2007, Fred had been publishing and marketing print and electronic products in healthcare for more than two decades. In 1985, he launched the Professional Learning Systems Division for Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. As president, Fred grew the division from a start-up to profitability by developing healthcare training technology and products and by acquiring and consolidating technology-training firms.The Division's key brands included Stedman's dictionary. Fred also was president, ElectricPress.com, a company providing publishers, wholesalers, and retailers with the capability to display the full text of books on the Web. Fred teaches marketing research, business strategy, e-marketing, and strategic marketing to undergraduate and graduate students at Loyola College in Maryland. Fred has an undergraduate degree in economics and an MBA from Loyola College in Maryland.

 

Associates

Marjory Spraycar

To the Kaufman-Wills Group, Marjory brings expertise in editorial process improvement and management, online editorial tracking systems, and institutional licensing strategies and implementation. Marjory started her medical publishing career at Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, where she served as editor for Stedman’s Medical Dictionary. Later she moved to the periodicals division as journal publisher, managing a portfolio of journals. In 2001, Marjory established a journal services business and manages several biomedical journals. For these titles she manages the editorial and review processes, conducts research on new product development, manages new content creation, and implements and manages CME programs. Marjory also has written and published two books.

 

Kevin Lomangino

Kevin brings extensive experience to the Kaufman-Wills Group in the areas of editorial, market research and analysis, and print and electronic product development. Kevin started his career in publishing at Lippincott Williams & Wilkins where he assisted with periodicals acquisitions and managed a portfolio of journals as Senior Editor. In 1998, Kevin established a communications and consulting business. Kevin also is a professional medical writer for several clinical titles such as Lippincott Williams & Wilkins’ Nutrition & the MD newsletter, Bone & Joint, and Topics in Pain Management.

 

Debbie Heise

Debbie offers Kaufman-Wills Group clients authority in copyright, permissions, translation rights, licensing, and commercial reprint sales.  Her publishing career began in international journal marketing at Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. Debbie then managed the copyright and permissions department with an annual budget of $2.3 million. In 2001, Debbie moved to Cadmus where she helped build a commercial reprint sales program generating sales of more than $3 million for The American Diabetes Association and The Endocrine Society. Most recently, she worked for Wiley selling bulk subscriptions.  Debbie earned a BA with honors in marketing from Loyola College in Maryland.

 

Ann Link
Ann brings 15 years of association publishing experience to the Kaufman Wills group.  Her expertise is in the areas of tiered pricing, multi-site sales, vendor RFPs and contracts, and new revenue streams.  She started her career at Mayo Clinic as Managing Editor of Gastroenterology for the American Gastroenterology Association. She was promoted to Director of Periodicals for that group where she launched spin-off products and a new title.  Later Ann became Director of Publications for the American Association of Immunologists.  Most recently, Ann served as the Executive Director of a small, burgeoning group, the American Society of Matrix Biologists -- adding to her understanding of association dynamics. Ann received an MA in English from the University of Iowa.
